Family Fridays-Homemade Butter

Homemade Butter

1/3 cup whipping cream

1 small jar, (we used baby food jars)

Put whipping cream in jar and shake until the cream is soft ball. Pour off milk, take out butter, stir until butter is firm, salt and eat with biscuits! Yummy!

Note: you have to shake hard, but it does work!

Family Fridays-Swimming

Nicholas won a gift card from the library and I thought he would go and buy a toy of some kind. Great, I thought more toys for my house. Well, I was shocked when he bought a pool and swimming trunks. The kids have really been enjoying the pool!

This is Neil, he loves it outside. I had put him in the pool for a while, but he was freezing so I changed him and put his bug cover over him and he was happy!

Family Fridays-Yogurt Smoothies in a Bag

As I have said before, my kids have been going to the Summer Reading Programs at our local library. Here is a recipe that they did (and yes it is in a zip lock baggie):
~
Yogurt Smoothie in a bag
~
1/4 c. yougurt(vanilla)
2 tsp. concentrated juice-thawed (orange)
1 tbsp low fat milk
~
Put into a snack baggie and squeeze. Stick a straw in corner of the bag and drink. Makes 1 serving.
I think you could use any flavor yogurt and any flavor concentrated juice. I have used grape juice with the vanilla yogurt, some people call them Purple Cows!

Fun Family Fridays-More Fun Popsicles

I had something else I wanted to share today, but I found this recipe from Kraft foods website that goes along with my Popsicle post and wanted to share it. These would be so fun for the family for the 4th of July! While at the Kraft Foods website, make sure you sign up for the food and family monthly booklet, it is great and FREE! Here is the recipe:
~
Rocket Pops
~

1 pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Brand Cherry Flavor Gelatin
1 cup sugar, divided
2 cups boiling water, divided
Ice cubes
2 cups cold water, divided
1 pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Brand Berry Blue Flavor Gelatin
1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed
~
Combine dry cherry gelatin mix and 1/2 cup of the sugar in medium bowl. Add 1 cup of the boiling water; stir at least 2 min. until gelatin is completely dissolved. Add enough ice cubes to 1 cup of the cold water to measure 2 cups. Add to gelatin; stir until ice is completely melted. Pour evenly into 16 (5-oz.) paper or plastic cups, adding about 1/4 cup of the gelatin to each cup. Freeze 1 hour.
Meanwhile, combine dry blue gelatin mix and remaining 1/2 cup sugar in medium bowl. Add remaining 1 cup boiling water; stir at least 2 min. until gelatin is completely dissolved. Add enough ice cubes to remaining 1 cup cold water to measure 2 cups. Add to gelatin; stir until ice is completely melted. Refrigerate 1 hour.
Spoon about 3 Tbsp. of the whipped topping over red gelatin in each cup; top evenly with blue gelatin, adding about 1/4 cup of the gelatin to each cup. Freeze 1 hour or until almost firm. Insert wooden pop stick or plastic spoon into center of each cup for handle. Freeze an additional 4 hours or overnight. To remove pops from cups, place bottoms of cups under warm running water for 15 sec. Press firmly on bottoms of cups to release pops. (Do not twist or pull pop sticks.) Store leftover pops in freezer.

Fun Family Friday- The Library Cooking Hour

I have told you all before that we are going to the summer library program it is a great program. Monday-Wednesday we go for programs, they serve lunch and give away prises. Three of my four kids have already won $25 Walmart Gift Cards. Last week at the Cooking hour the kids made Dirt Pudding. They did it in ziplock bags, yes another ziplock bag recipe Liz! lol! I have placed some pictures on top of this post, my kids love cooking hour actually better than story hour, but don't tell the library that. lol. Here is the recipe they used.
~
Dirt Pudding
~
1/2 pkg Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix
1 cup cold milk
2 oz. whipped topping
1 (gallon size) Zip-Top freezer bag(for pudding)
1 (quart size) Zip-Top bag (for Cookies)
6 Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
bowl
gummy worms
~
Combine pudding mix and cold water in gallon zip-top freezer bag. Seal tightly. Shake and squish until pudding is well blended and starts to thicken. spoon the whipped topping into bag; seal. Squish gently until blended. Put the cookies in the quart zip-top bag and seal tightly. Smash and squish the bag until the cookies are all crumbs. Pour about half of the cookies in the bottom of the bowl. pour the prepared pudding over the crumbs (cut a small slit on the edge of the bottom of the bag and it will come out easier) and top with the remaining cookie crumb. Top with gummy bears.
Makes two servings.

Fun Popsickles

I shared one part of this on Works for me Wednesday. You use pre-made gelatin or pudding cups. They can usually be found for under a dollar for 4 cups. All you do is remove the foil lid and insert a pop stick into the pudding or gelatin cup. (I use the sticks from my Popsicle holders.) Freeze them for 5 hours or overnight to allow to firm. To remove the pop from the cup, place bottom of cup under warm running water for 15 seconds. Press firmly on bottom of cup to release pop. (Do not twist or pull pop stick) you can buy the mixed flavor ones and get a really pretty Popsicle! Someone commented that you can also use the cup for the kids to put there pop when then do not want to hold it anymore and someone else commented on how using some of the pre-packed jello and pudding that is fat free or even sugar free can be a great snack for dieting adults!
~
I also make homemade pudding pops here is my recipe:
Pudding Pops
~
1 lg. pkg. pudding (not instant)
3 cups milk
~
Combine pudding with 3 cups milk. Mix only enough to blend well. Quickly pour into Popsicle molds and freeze. Chocolate and vanilla pudding may be layered for a fun treat.
Makes 8-10 pops
~
Another Popsicle treat I do is make Popsicles out of juice. I usually use orange juice or Juicy Juice. Last year I tried Watermelon flavor and my kids loved that. You will have to experiment with what juices your child/ren likes best. And best yet these are actually pretty healthy.

Family Fridays-Old Time Days Fun

Last week, we had a bad storm and the electric has been having problems every since. One night it went all the way off. My ds who is 7 said he was, "bored." My 2 year old twins were just scared, so my dh told them about how in the old days people used to not have electric and had to find other things to do to entertain themselves. He told them about how some used oil lamps like we were using and then we just talked to each other and then dh told them about some of the things they did in the old days Dh played his guitar, we sang songs, dances and just laughed. We had a really good time. The electric came back on about 2 hours after it went off and we all went to bed. The kids had so much fun that we plan to have more "Old Time Days" fun as dh calls it, even if the electric does not go off.

Family Fridays- Park Fun

Last weekend, we all went to the park. This was a new park that we had not been to before. It is about a 10 minute drive from our house and the kids really enjoyed it. This park has a neater slide than the others we have been going to visit. I also noticed that this park has a really nice picnic area. A shelter and several gazabos with built in picnic tables, so we are going to have several outings to this park this summer and have some picnics. It has been so hot lately, that I always take a small cooler filled with bottled water and sippies. The kids are always ready for a cold drink as are my husband and I. This park visit I also took some of those freezer popcickles and the kids loved those, but we ate those as soon as we got to the park because I did not know how long they would last in the cooler because I only had the blue ice pack in the cooler, usually that is all I ever use. So, anyways, we will be visiting the park more this summer and hey it's FREE!

Family Fridays-Fun Cooking Activity Recipes

I have never really said this here but my family has a Family Fun Night once a week. We usually do this on Mondays. We have a brief gospel lesson and then do something fun as a family. I think it brings our family closer together. We also have a special snack. Sometimes this is the fun activity we do together. We have made cookies, dirt, and lots of other things. I used this fun recipe when my 7 year old was learning to count and I think I am going to use it again since I working on counting with the twins!

Count Kebobs

Apples (sliced)

Large Marshmallows

Pineapple chunks

Oranges (peeled and pulled apart in sections)

Wooden Skewers

1. Count 1 apple

2. Count 2 marshmallows

3. Count 3 pineapple chuncks

4. Count 4 orange sections

5. Push on skewer

6. Count the number of pieces in all

7. Eat and Enjoy!

Hope everyone has a GREAT Friday!

Since I mentioned it I will give you the dirt recipe too.

~

Dirt Pudding

1 pkg. Oreo cookies

4 T. stick margarine

1 - 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese

1 - 12-oz. Cool Whip

2 small pkg. instant vanilla pudding

3-1/2 c. milk
Directions:Melt margarine & mix with Oreos. Save 1 cup for topping. Press remaining mixture into pan for crust. Cream cheese & gradually add milk. Add pudding & blend well. Blend in Cool Whip by hand. Pour into crust, sprinkle reserved Oreos on top & refrigerate. You can line small flower pots with foil and put enough for one serving in them and in topping with a gummy worm. You can make this seasonal, i.e. for Halloween put spooky things on top. It's a fun dessert!

Family Fridays-Fudge in a Bag

Here is another recipe that I like to do with my kids in the ziplock bags. First was ice cream then bread and now fudge. Have a good Friday!
~
Fudge in a Bag
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1 pound box confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 ounces cream cheese
~
Add all ingredients to a one gallon zip-lock bag and seal. Pass bag around and let everybody help mix it up by squeezing it for 30 minutes. Fudge can be served out of bag or spread on pan and cut. It is kind of a soft fudge but so good.

Family Fridays-Bread in a Bag

We have made this together several times. It is so much fun!

Bread in a Bag

2 cups white bread flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

3 tablespoons powdered milk

3 tablespoons sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 package Rapid Rise yeast

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 cup hot water (125 to 130 degrees F)

Extra flour to use during the kneading process

Combine white flour, whole wheat flour, yeast, sugar, salt and powdered milk in a 1 gallon heavy duty Ziploc freezer bag. Squeeze upper part of bag to force out the air. Shake and work bag with fingers to blend ingredients. Add hot water and oil to dry ingredients. Reseal bag. Mix by working bag with fingers, until the dough is completely mixed and pulls away from the bag. On floured surface, knead dough 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Put dough back into bag and let it rest 10 minutes. If working in teams, divide dough in half and shape. Let rise until double in bulk. Bake at 350 for 20 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pan and cool on wire rack or dish towels.

Family Fridays-Tin Can Ice Cream

Well, this is not something we did this week but we do this every summer and I wanted to share. I did this in the elementry schools in my county when I worked as a County Extension Agent. I decided to bring the fun home. We make Tin Can Ice Cream. My oldest son loves making it and I can not wait to do this with my 2 year old twins this summer. Here is the recipe:
~
Tin Can Ice Cream
~
1/2 cup Milk
1/2 cup Half and Half
1/4 cup Sugar
1/4 tsp. Vanilla Extract
Nuts or Fruit, as desired
~
1. Combine ingredients in a one pound coffee can. Place a tight fitting plastic lid on the can.
2. Place inside a 3-pound coffee can.
3. Pack larger can with crushed ice. Pour 1/2 cup rock salt evenly over ice.
4. Place a tight fitting lid on the three pound can. Tape with masking tape. (It is possible for the lid to come off and the contents to spill.)
5. Roll the cans back and forth on a table or the floor for about 15 minutes.
6. Open the outer can. Remove the inner can; wipe lid clean and open.
7. Use a spatula to stir the mixture and scrape the sides of the inner can. Replace the lid.
8. Drain liquid from the larger can. (The salty liquid is called brine.)
9. Replace the smaller can inside the larger can. Pack with additional ice and salt.
10. Cover. Roll cans back and forth for 10 minutes.
11. Open outer can. Remove inner can. Wipe lid clean, open and enjoy.
~
NOTE: My family does not drink coffee, so I got coffee cans from my office. However, since leaving there, I have used the ziploc bag method instead of the tin cans. You use 2 gallon and 1 gallon ziplock FREEZER bags. Personally, I like the bags better.
